ranking first in class; nominated Associate Justice of the
Supreme Court of the United States by President Nixon, on
October 21, 1971, confirmed December 10, 1971, sworn in on
January 7, 1972; nominated by President Reagan as Chief Justice
of the United States on June 17, 1986; sworn in on September 26,
1986.
